The Peloponnese supplies one third of Greek wine production, with a majority of white wines (60%) produced by 180 wineries and 360 winemakers. A vast peninsula linked to Greece well known for its raisins, the Peloponnese was somehow predisposed to winegrowing, as its name literally means the island of Peloponnesus, the latter being the cupbearer of Poseidon, the person who served wine at court.
The richness of this peninsula is its wide variety of grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah or Viognier. Today, the three most planted white grape varieties are : Roditis, the Sultanina and the Moschofilero which has become one of the emblematic white grape varieties of Greece in the world.
This essential wine represents today 5 to 7% of the Greek wine production. It is elaborated by incorporating a small quantity of resin, only from Aleppo pine, which was used 2000 years ago to waterproof amphoras. The resin also has medical properties and protected the wine.
