The region of Calchaqui is more often referred to as the region of Cafayate, a small town in the Calchaqui Valley, south of the Salta region. The term Calchaqui Valley can be misleading: this region actually refers to a set of valleys around Cafayate, on the edge of the Andean mountains, which offers spectacular contrasting landscapes.
The high altitude defines the terroir, with the warmth of the latitude tempered by the elevation and intensity of the sun's rays giving the grapes a thicker skin. The thermal difference between day and night lengthens the ripening period of the grape and allows the wine to be balanced. Dry soils, alternating between sandy marl and gravel areas, are optimal for viticulture.
The region of Calchaqui is famous for its fresh white wines with floral aromas and deep flavors, based on the Torrontés riojana grape variety.
