The region of Castilla y León occupies a privileged place in the Spanish wine landscape. Nine denominations of origin and eight sets of local wine vineyards define the production areas of the region. The Duero River delimits the most important wine producing areas in the quality wine markets.
These appellations bring together more than 400 wineries producing quality wines, and are under the protection of the supervisory boards of each zone. The vineyard landscapes, dotted with a profusion of wineries with popular architecture, also testify to the popularity of the wine tradition in Castilla y León. The entire range of quality wines is produced in the region. More recently, the region has discovered its specialties: Rueda and its modern white wines that highlight the Verdejo grape variety as well as the very good red wines of Bierzo (Mencia grape variety) on the Galician border.
