Vino de Mesa is the generic name for the most common and lightest of the wines commonly drunk with meals. In general, in the European Union, it is a wine of inferior quality that has no appellation of origin or geographical indication.
The European Union has two categories: table wine (vino de Mesa) and quality wine. The table wine, besides not being able to indicate its region of production, could not indicate the year of harvest or the grape variety.
However, as an exception, fairly ambitious wines could be qualified as table wines, if they were made from non-traditional grape varieties or with non-conventional winemaking processes. The best known example is that of the "supertoscanos", which are made in greater quantities than those allowed of international varieties or do not include the small obligatory proportion of Cannaiolo, Malvasia and Trebbiano for the Tuscan remedy concerned.
