Little known for its wines and in spite of its small surface area, Switzerland nevertheless has an important place in the wine market. First of all, wine consumption is high. The inhabitants of this old wine-producing nation are among the highest white wine consumers in the world. With 85 million liters of wine per year, however, production does not cover demand and the country relies on imports.
While the Swiss are among the world's largest importers of white wine, they also consume almost all of their production. Swiss wine is therefore little exported but is consumed locally.
