The Niagara Peninsula vineyard in Ontario occupies 5200 ha, the largest wine-growing area in the country.
Bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, bounded by rivers to the east and west, it stretches between plains and hillsides on rich soils composed of clay, silt or sand. The cool climate is tempered by the lake and the vines benefit from relatively mild autumns that extend the ripening period of the grapes. Having favoured hybrids, the producers of the peninsula have logically selected vinifera varieties well adapted to the local climate.
Riesling and Chardonnay in particular produce particularly tonic and fragrant wines, but the great specialty of the Niagara Peninsula remains its fabulous icewine (ice wines), made from frozen grapes harvested in the depths of winter.
