Rioja is a region and a vineyard in northern Spain. Covering an area of 55,000 hectares, La Rioja is the oldest, best known and noblest Spanish vineyard. It was the first to obtain the D.O.C. designation. This region is divided into three sub-areas: La Rioja Alta, La Rioja Baja and La Rioja Alavesa.
Rioja are fine, aromatic and balanced rosé wines. The wines made from this grape variety are very varied: those of La Rioja Alavesa are elegant, those of La Rioja Alta, fresh and with good ageing potential, and those of La Rioja Baja are simple and rich in alcohol. The Riojas are generally vinified as a single variety like Faustino Crianza or blended like Era Costana Tempranillo, a blend of tempranillo, grenache and carignan.
