One word always comes on mind when we describing Austrian wines: freshness. In this country with a continental climate, the microclimates vary according to the geographical location of each region. The diversity of soils, bodies of water, such as tributaries and the Neusiedlersee lake, as well as the altitude and orientation of the vineyards play an important role.
Of the 46,500 hectares of vineyards, 14 red grape varieties are allowed for production. The share of red grape varieties has doubled in the last 20 years and now accounts for a third of the vineyard area. Most of the wines made from them are unpretentious, when they are in their youthful glory.
The country's reds are salivating, starting with the native grape variety Blaufränkish. Since the 1990s, quality has been the order of the day. A group of ambitious young producers around Deutsch Schützen do justice to the grape variety. At Wachter Wiesler, blaufränkish reaches its zenith, where strength and elegance are combined. The dense notes of red plum, blueberry and black cherry are supported by firm tannins and marked acidity.
