The viticultural zone of PGI Epiros consists of four districts: Arta - Ioannina - Thesprotia and Preveza. The mountainous Ioannina region represents the bulk of the zone, and it’s where PDO Zitsa, PGI Epirus, PGI Ioannina and PGI Metsovo wines are produced.
The white Debina grape can withstand Zitza’s high altitude, cold temperatures, and northern winds, and covers approximately 95% of its vineyards. Other grapes grown in the region are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Traminer, Bekiari and the indigenous Vlahiko. Equipped with some of the highest vineyards in Greece, Epiros’s unique wines are starting to capture the attention of red wine drinkers.
