In the regional entity of Ioannina, in the north-east of Epirus, the IGP zone Μetsovo, established in 1997, includes the municipal units of Metsovo and Zagori. Vineyards must be at least 500 m above sea level.
The village of Metsovo is located in the central-eastern part of the regional entity of Ioannina and can claim the title of the highest altitude wine-growing area in Greece. Metsovo IGP wines are red, made from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety, grown here for the first time in Greece. With the change in 2008 the composition in terms of grape varieties was expanded to include white wines as well. Metsovo IGP wines are produced by 1 winery.
