Campania is the region of Naples, a famous city in southern Italy. The region is very sunny, with hot, dry summers and mild winters that favour a long period of grape ripening. The cool winds from the Mediterranean and the Apennines temper the climate and allow the fruit to retain a high acidity. With its 47,000 hectares of vineyards, Campania is full of a diversity of terroirs. The region has more DOCGs (appellation for superior category wines) than any of its southern neighbors.
Mount Vesuvius south of Naples provides excellent volcanic soil for winemaking. Around it, the DOC Vesuvio vines give birth to Lacryma Christi. This historically renowned name refers to a wide range of products, such as reds.
Aglianico is the local aristocratic red grape variety which has the particularity of being one of the few floral Italian red grape varieties. With it, the producers of Campania make the wine of Taurasi, corpulent, tannic and with high acidity.
