The Barbera d'Alba Denomination of Controlled Origin is an Italian denomination of the Piedmont region, recognized DOC since May 27, 1970. Only red wines harvested within the production area defined by the decree are entitled to the Barbera d'Alba DOC. The authorized vineyards are located in the province of Cuneo. The approximately 2,500 hectares of Barbera d'Alba vineyards allow an annual production of about 44,000 hectoliters.
The red wines of Barbera d'Alba are generally ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose is vinous, intense and characteristic, with a powerful and slightly tannic palate. The Barbera d'Alba wine can be aged for 5 - 7 years and is similar in quality to a Barolo. Barbera d'Alba is considered in Italy as one of the best appellations using the Barbera grape variety.
