Barolo and Barbaresco are small DOGC denominations (Denominazione de Origine Controllada Garantida -). They cover only a few hectares and are located on both sides of the city of Alba, in northwestern Italy.
The nebbiolo, an old and noble Piedmontese grape variety, is the only grape variety of the Barolo and Barbaresco wines. It takes its name from the mist (nebbia) that covers the hills of Italian Piedmont in autumn.
As in Burgundy, producers have identified crus, specific terroirs whose names may appear on the label. Some of them are well known, such as Bricco Asili and Cerequio and Cannubi in Barolo, among many others.
Barolo and Barbaresco share characteristics of power and structure that make them wines with long ageing potential. Their distinguishing feature: a lot of body, tannins, alcohol and acidity.
