Dolcetto is a red grape variety from Piedmont whose territory extends in the hills of Langhe, particularly in Dogliani, in the south of the Barolo region. Dolcetto-based wines generally have a robe with easily identifiable notes of black fruits (blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants).
The taste is always relatively sweet, fruity, with little acidity and civilized tannins. The best wines that are also the most concentrated come mostly from the area around Alba. They can be kept without problems for about three years but do not improve with age.
The name dolcetto refers to the relatively moderate acid content of the wines, not to their sweetness, since they are not sweet wines in any way. Dolcetto is authorized in no less than 15 appellations and plays the leading role in 11 of these appellations.
The grape variety is easy and reaches maturity up to four weeks earlier than barbera and nebbiolo. This is why it is grown in many places in Piedmont, and even as far away as Liguria, as a local clone, the ormeasco.
