Vino Nobile di Montepulciano originates in the hills between the Val d'Orcia and the Val di Chiana. Today we can see that this red wine has maintained its fame over the centuries. It is especially in the last fifteen years that the wine heritage of Montepulciano has undergone a positive evolution. Improvements in the structure of the vineyards and in the cellar equipment have allowed the quality standard of Vino Nobile to be raised, and it is now one of the most prestigious red wines in Italy.
The basic grape varieties are Sangiovese and Canaiolo nero. Recommended or authorized grape varieties can compete as long as the percentage of white grape varieties does not exceed 10%. The grape yield per hectare must not exceed 80 quintals.
After at least three years of aging, calculated from the year of the grape harvest, including six months of bottle maturation, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano can obtain the qualification "reserve".
