The Romans were already singing the praises of the wines of Navarre, where winemaking exploded in the 12th century. At the end of the 19th century, there were almost 50,000 hectares of vineyards! Nowadays, there are only 18,000 hectares!
There are currently 5 areas: Valdizarbe in the far north, where the northernmost vineyards of Spain are located, Tierra Estella, in the northwest, Baja Montaña, in the northeast, Ribera Alta, in the center, Ribera Baja, in the south of the region, around the Ebro. It is in Ribera Baja that most of the wineries are located.
Navarra has a very diverse landscape and the vineyards are located between 250 m and 600 m above sea level. Almost the entire region enjoys a continental climate, which is ideal for producing good wines. Grenache remains the main grape variety used, ahead of Tempranillo. Since the end of the 80s, there has been a clear trend towards diversification and many Cabernet and Merlot vines have been planted.
