In Formentera, one of the most traditional agricultural activities is viticulture! Evidence of wine-growing activities dating back to the 13th century has even been found in the vineyards of Sa Mola.
In 1972, the bodega Juan Riera Mayans in La Mola began bottling and marketing its wine on the island of Formentera, and even on its neighbor Ibiza. At that time, the winery was already carrying out this activity with the Protected Geographical Indication "Formentera", which, as in Ibiza, refers to the "Wines of the Earth" originating from the wine-growing areas of Formentera. The grape varieties authorized to benefit from this mention for red wines are : Tempranilla, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Fogoneu.
Today, winemaking is the main agricultural activity in Formentera, which has more than 60 hectares of vineyards, representing 12.5% of the total utilized agricultural area. The traditional and main variety is the monastrell, a black grape with which red wines are produced that are highly appreciated by oenologists, Formentera's inhabitants and visitors to the island.
