Near Barcelona, Alella is a little-known region of Catalonia. Wine growing dates back to the Romans in the first century. The city of Alella preserves many testimonies of this rich past. Appreciated for their quality, the wines of Alella were served at the Court of Aragon and chosen by the Counts of Barcelona before occupying all the bourgeois tables.
Alta Alella, a young Catalan winery, has taken up the challenge of reviving Catalan traditions. Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets and his wife created the company in the 1990s, following the precepts of organic farming, despite the proximity of Barcelona and the beaches, which impose terrible real estate pressure.
A very early vintage and a dry summer meant that the berries were unusually concentrated and the later grape varieties were able to enjoy a refreshing September. Small yield harvest throughout the whole of Cataogne. The harvest is of course manual at the estate.
