Meursault AOC is a communal appellation of the Côte de Beaune, in the department of Côte d'Or, strictly limited to the commune of Meursault. The Meursault appellation has a total of 21 climates classified as Premier Cru. As often in Burgundy, the names of appellations may or may not be followed by the name of their climate of origin.
Meursault is probably the most famous village in Burgundy for white wines. Located in the south of the Côte de Beaune, its vineyards are spread out on gentle slopes over about 400 hectares, between 230 and 360 meters of altitude. The orientation to the east is very favorable thanks to its maximum sunshine. The vines of Meursault rest on white marls in a particularly favorable limestone environment of the Bathonian era.
The wines of Meursault are mostly white wines made from the Chardonnay grape variety. The white Meursault wines show an aromatic power specific to Chardonnay, with great balance. It is often said that it is the Meursault wines that most enhance the expression of Chardonnay.
