it is on the saint-julien plateau that château talbot can be seen from afar, amid a sea of vines, among the tall trees of its park. the history of this wine is rich. it is named after constable talbot, earl of shrewsbury, a famous english warrior and governor of guyenne, defeated at the battle of castillon in 1453. in 1855, during the classification of the médoc and graves crus ordered by emperor napoleon iii, château talbot was promoted to the fourth grand cru classé of saint-julien. after being owned by the marquis d'aux for decades, the estate was acquired in 1918 by désiré cordier. a sumptuous and complex provencal bouquet of toasted herbs, cherries, licorice and undergrowth emerges from this deep plum and ruby colored 2004. tart acidity adds freshness, but the overall impression is one of abundant redcurrant and cherry fruit presented in a bold, superficial style.
