originally, the vineyards of léoville poyferré were one with those which today constitute the vineyards of léoville las cases and léoville barton. the original estate was created by the parliamentarian jean de moytié in 1638. the wine was already well known, appreciated and expensive in the 18th century, thanks to the efforts of its owner since 1740, blaise-alexandre de gasq, lord of léoville. four of his heirs shared the estate at the time of the revolution. one of them, the marquis de las cases, owner of a quarter of the land, having fled abroad, the other three obtained from the revolutionary state a partial confiscation of the estate, concerning precisely this quarter. this parcel will become léoville barton. when the remaining parcels were divided up in 1840, jeanne de poyferré, granddaughter of the marquis, inherited the current estate, which took the name château de léoville poyferré. the classification of médoc wines took place shortly after, in 1855. the original property was divided into three estates and each was given the rank of second grand cru classé. sold several times, léoville poyferré was sold in 1920 to a family from the north of france, now represented by didier cuvelier. a vestige of the upheavals of history, the château itself and the main courtyard are still shared between the owners of léoville poyferré and léoville las cases. under the impetus of didier cuvelier and the oenologist michel rolland, château léoville poyferré has the technical and human potential to rival its cousin. château moulin riche was the second wine of château léoville poyferré. as of the 2009 vintage, château moulin riche will become a full-fledged wine, while pavillon de poyferré will be the second wine of château léoville poyferré and moulin riche. the modernization of the cellars and the use of a large proportion of new wood for the maturing of the wines (80%) have contributed to the elaboration of a complex nectar, with an incredible depth. château léoville poyferré, a second grand cru classé of saint-julien, is now renowned for its sumptuous texture, its inimitable smoothness, its elegance and its exceptional ageing potential. to make it, the estate has grown its vines of cabernet sauvignon (dominant in the blend), merlot, petit verdot and cabernet franc on gravel and clay-sand soils composed of pebbles and gravel. it is here that the vines draw their letters of nobility and are the object of all the attentions. thus, the harvest is done by hand and the crop is meticulously sorted twice before the start of the vinification. the wine is then aged in new barrels for 18 to 20 months. a technique that gives the wine a beautiful substance and, above all, as we said, a very good aging potential.
