the clos de la coulée de serrant is an appellation in its own right, of seven hectares located in the heart of the savennières appellation, in the manner of a climat in burgundy. planted in the 12th century by the cistercian monks of the abbey of saint-nicolas d'angers, this seven-hectare vineyard is ideally situated overhanging the loire, at the point where the coulée (stream) of serrant flows into the river. louis xi and louis xiv had elected it among their favorite wines. restored in the 1960s by madame joly, the estate has since been taken over by her son nicolas. the vineyards, which take advantage of the micro-climate caused by the proximity of the river and the coulee, are exclusively planted with chenin blanc (or pineau de la loire), a grape variety appreciated for its beautiful acidity and its aromatic power. this appellation is held in monopoly by nicolas joly, owner of the coulée de serrant estate. nicolas joly, a leading advocate of biodynamic viticulture since 1985, excludes all use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to give full expression to the remarkable terroir from which the wine is made. the vineyard is partly worked by horseback or by hand, and the average yields are 20-25 hl/hr; the vines range in age from 35 to over 80 years. in the cellar, the wine is made in 500l barrels (never more than 5% new wood). virginie, nicolas joly's daughter, is gradually taking over the management of the estate. this domain produces wines in a very recognizable style, with advanced maturities. for more information: read the blog post on la coulée de serrant. the cuvée "le clos de la bergerie" belongs to the savennières-roche-aux-moines appellation. the vines are about 30 years old on average, and the soils are composed of schist that is a little thicker than those of the rest of the estate. the slopes are more moderate than in the famous coulée de serrant, and more oriented towards the east. once harvested, the grapes arrive at the winery for vinification. this is done in order to respect the precious fruit of biodynamic viticulture: no chaptalization, no second yeast addition and no temperature control. in addition, there are one or two rackings and stirring of the lees during the maturing process which takes place in non-new oak barrels. the wine is not filtered and only a small dose of sulfur is used. at the tasting, we discover a tonic wine, delivering beautiful bitters, a vibrant and pure matter, ripe fruit flavors and a great freshness. you should absolutely wait in the cellar to discover its mysteries, and you can keep it open for several days to appreciate its evolution... virginie joly likes to specify that her wine is a living product.
