founded in 1863 by frédéric mugnier, this very beautiful estate of chambolle-musigny included at the beginning of the 20th century about twenty hectares of vineyards, located on chambolle and nuits-saint-georges. at that time, the wines were sold under the label château de chambolle-musigny, until the creation of the aoc. the estate was run by the family's descendants until 1949. between 1950 and 1978, jacques-frédéric mugnier, great-grandson of the founder, leased the entire vineyard to a large local merchant. he then took over the direct exploitation of the chambolle vineyards. in 2004, his son frédéric (who has been in charge of the estate since 1985) took over the part of the estate still under lease, the clos de la maréchale in nuits-saint-georges. the mugnier estate went from 4 to 14 hectares in one go! at the domaine jacques-frédéric mugnier, the work is extremely meticulous, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. his wines with a very pure and delicate style represent for many amateurs the archetype of a very great pinot noir of burgundy. the musigny grand cru and the chambolle-musigny 1er cru les amoureuses are the two emblematic and most sought-after wines of the estate. the clos de la maréchale is among the best wines of nuits saint-georges. a few years of ageing are necessary to bring out the delicate floral notes that characterize it. it is one of the finest nuits-saint-georges wines of the appellation, far from some of the more austere vintages of the côte d'or.
