the trévallon estate was born thanks to the initiative of éloi dürrbach, a winemaker who started from nothing but a small piece of scrubland. in the 1950s, éloi's parents, jacqueline and rené, settled at mas chabert in the alpilles. this artistic couple was close to the painter picasso, for whom jacqueline dürrbach created tapestries. they acquired the trévallon estate in the early 1960s, located just 600 meters from their place of residence, but without exploiting the land for vine cultivation. ten years later, in 1973, éloi dürrbach returned to paris after completing his studies in architecture and mathematics. at the age of 21, he embraced his winemaking vocation and set out to clear the limestone rocks and soils to plant vines on the wild lands of the trévallon estate. the beginnings were difficult, both for the winemaker and for his wines. the ruins of the estate had no cellar, and the first harvest of the estate would be vinified outdoors, in 1976. from the beginning, éloi dürrbach adopted an organic approach, ignoring the agricultural trend of the time that favored high yields. trévallon estate began to gain recognition in the 1980s, when the nearby michelin-starred hotel-restaurant, l'oustau de baumanière, started buying its wines. at the time, these wines were composed of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% syrah, and were vinified with whole clusters. a few years later, his daughter floriane joined him at the estate. unfortunately, éloi dürrbach passed away suddenly in november 2021. his passing shook the wine world and the critics, who had praised his captivating wines for so many years. a new era opens at the famous trévallon estate. its founder, éloi dürrbach, has passed away. he had sculpted his terroir by moving large blocks of stone with a bulldozer, creating a rocky soil on the clay-limestone base of the northern slope of the alpilles. a free thinker and visionary, he believed in the ability of cabernet sauvignon, a traditional provencal grape variety, when combined with syrah, to produce great provencal red wines, and thus left the appellation of baux-de-provence. grapes, harvested at perfect maturity, combined with meticulous whole-cluster fermentation and prolonged aging for up to two years in large oak barrels, allow for the production of wines that are both dense, taut, and refined. the reds of trévallon express a great mediterranean typicity through their aromatic complexity, with notes of spices, scrubland, and black truffle, while still retaining a northern freshness. on 2 hectares, where marsanne, roussanne, chardonnay, and grenache are planted, subtle whites are born, vinous and adorned with delicate bitterness and sweet floral aromas. ostiane and antoine, éloi dürrbach's children, accompanied by a dedicated team, now embody the future of this exemplary estate and are preparing to face the climate challenges ahead. in the bouches-du-rhône, a department in the south of france, you will find a multitude of activities and sites to discover. here are some suggestions: • visit the city of marseille: explore the old port, discover the basilica of notre-dame-de-la-garde, stroll through the panier district, and visit the museum of european and mediterranean civilizations (mucem). • explore the provencal villages: wander through the charming hilltop villages of bouches-du-rhône, such as les baux-de-provence, saint-rémy-de-provence, and lourmarin, and soak up the authentic atmosphere of provence. • visit historical sites: discover the rich historical heritage of bouches-du-rhône by visiting sites such as the ancient theater of arles, the ruins of glanum in saint-rémy-de-provence, and the château d'if off the coast of marseille.
