Since the end of apartheid, South African viticulture has risen from its ashes and has established itself on the world market as a country producing quality wine that is constantly progressing. Most of the vineyards are located in the southwestern part of the country, within the Cape Province. They are located close to the coast and are moving inland as the wine industry grows. The diverse landscapes of mountains, hills, plateaus and valleys offer the possibility of producing a wide range of different wines.
In the white grape varieties, Chenin Blanc is still the most widespread and gives wines of various styles. The use of oak in the maturing process gives the wine body and woody, toasty notes. Chardonnay produces exceptional wines with great character on fresh vineyards. The Sauvignon Blanc is very successful. It gives light, nervous wines with grassy flavors, but also more structured and complex wines with dried fruit flavors and vegetal notes as they age. The Muscat of Alexandria or Hanepoot is used for delicious dessert wines such as the wine of Constance.
