The AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the flagship of the southern Rhone Valley's wine heritage, and one of France's greatest vintages. The vineyard covers more than 3,000 hectares of vines and produces nearly 100,000 hectoliters of wine each year, 93% red. It extends over almost the entire commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 4 neighboring communes.
The vines are pruned in goblets to protect the bunches from the mistral wind and sun burns. The Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyard, which already has unique growing conditions, has also built up its very rich aromas through the use of many grape varieties: Grenache noir remains dominant for the reds.
The red wines are admirably complex. It should be appreciated after a few years of cellaring, as the best vintages can still be appreciated in bottle over several decades.
