The Saint-Joseph vineyard extends on the right bank of the Rhône at the 45th parallel. The vineyard is planted on steep hillsides, terraced since antiquity. Formerly called "Wine of Mauves", it was the Jesuits who, in the 17th century, gave it its present name. Today, the appellation is known for its red wines made from Syrah, both powerful and fine.
The main grape variety is Syrah even if it is allowed to add 10% Roussanne or Marsanne - which allows to refine its power. Syrah gives powerful wines with aromas of peppery spices with a hint of violet. It gives the wines their most beautiful dark and aromatic notes.
