On the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, the Central Otago vineyards are spread out on the heights around the tourist city of Queenstown. The vineyards are anchored in this spectacular mountainous landscape, with vines clinging to the hillsides and steep slopes.
Central Otago is the only region in the country with a cold continental climate. The seasons are well marked and the temperature variations between day and night are strong. The region receives a high amount of sunshine, which explains why the wines have a high alcohol content.
Over the last 25 years, this region has become the new world standard for Pinot Noir from the New World. The Pinot Noir grape variety makes up 80% of the Central Otago vineyard and the rest is allocated to cool climate white grape varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Gris.
