The main peculiarity of Costers del Segre is that its land extends over the entire province of Lerida, from the pre-Pyrenean region of the Tremp zone to the dry and sinuous horography of the Garrigues zone. For this reason the region is divided into 6 sub-areas: Pallars Jussà, Segrià, Raimat, Artesa de Segre, Vall del riu Corb and Les Garrigues.
Created in the 85's, the wines of this AO are known every year not only for their quality, but also as innovative and avant-garde in the elaboration and in the blends made between external varieties and local grapes. Thus we find Grenache, Carignan or Macabeu, and even Viognier, Müller Thurgau or Pinot Blanc. There is a will to differentiate.
Although it is difficult to define the type of climate and soil of Costers del Segre which extends over such geographically opposed zones and vineyards so dispersed, in general the climate is continental with rare rains. The majority of the vineyards are located in the plain of Lerida or in relatively watery valleys where the soil is brown limestone type, poor in organic matter.
