To elaborate rioja, producers must use the 7 authorized grape varieties that come from 3 sub-regions: Rioja Alta in the northwest, Rioja Alavesa in the Basque Country and Rioja Baja in the south and Navarra.
Red grape varieties dominate Rioja and are used for 3/4 of the production. Wines from this region typically undergo a very long ageing process in oak barrels. With the Ribera del Duero region, the Rioja authorities impose a longer maturation period than allowed by Spanish legislation.
The Rioja red wines are made from Tempranillo, mainly Grenache, Carignan and Graciano. Other grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are found in small quantities. This blend allows to combine freshness, power, depth and finesse offering rare wines of exceptional quality. The rioja can be recognized by its deep robe and powerful tannins.
