The vineyard of Languedoc-Roussillon extends over 4 departments: Aude, Gard, Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales, on a surface of 42.800 hectares and for a production of more than 1.800.000 hectoliters per year.
Languedoc-Roussillon is located in a Mediterranean climate zone, characterized by mild winters, hot and dry summers and low rainfall. The prevailing wind, the Tramontane, favors the drying of the vines and prevents diseases. This remarkable climate is therefore ideal for the cultivation of vines.
In 1970, the noble grape varieties were planted, which gave a revival of popularity to the wines of Languedoc-Roussillon. The grape varieties used are therefore very numerous, the main ones being white grenache, muscat, bourboulenc, clairette, mauzac and picpoul. The best known appellations are among others the Blanquette-de-Limoux (recognized as "the oldest wine in the world") or the Muscat-de-Rivesaltes.
