Margaret River is located at 200 kilometers in the south of Perth, the capital of the state of Western Australia. This coastal region of the Indian Ocean has a warm and humid oceanic climate. The climate of Margaret River is similar as Bordeaux and allows the production of more European wines than other Australian wine regions. Moreover, this region is recognized in Australia for its production of European style wines.
The main red grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing wines comparable to those of Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are often blended to make high quality wines. The best Cabernet Sauvignons in Australia are found in the Margaret River, and develop black fruit and fern aromas on the palate. The region also produces high alcohol syrahs.
