Saumur was an important wine trading place in the 12th century due to its ideal topographical conditions. Today, most of the major regional wine merchants are still based in this area. The AOC Saumur white wine was consecrated by a decree of December 31,1957.
The Saumur blanc appellation area includes 28 municipalities in Maine-et-Loire, 9 in Vienne and 2 in Deux-Sèvres. The vineyard covers a total area of 450 hectares, for an annual production of about 25,000 hectoliters. The Saumur blanc vineyard is scattered in small islands, on tufa mounds and Senonian outcrops. The tuffeau brings finesse and lightness.
The grape varieties used for Saumur blanc are Chenin, at least 80%, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. Dry and elegant white, sometimes very opulent, the Saumur wine reveals its finely mineral gustatory harmony. The supple wines can be drunk within 5 years. The most concentrated white wines can be kept for up to 15 years. The Saumur Blanc appellation gathers in its bosom domains of great quality, such as Domaine Saint-Just, Château de Villeneuve, Clos Rougeard, Domaine des Roches Neuves or Domaine Guiberteau.
