Constantia owes its fame to its legendary fortified wine with the title Vin de Constance. This wine-growing region has recently resumed its wine production and has earned its reputation with its masterful white wine.
The wine growing area of Constantia is located in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. Its extent is limited by the urbanization of the metropolis and the Constantiaberg and Vlakkenberg mountains. The vineyards extend from the lowlands to the mountain slopes. At around 400 meters above sea level, these vineyards are among the steepest in South Africa. The winds and the shade of the mountains keep the vineyards cool. On the slopes, the grapes are able to retain their invigorating acidity.
The Constantia area is home to a small group of independent winegrowers known for their admirable work and devotion to the cultivation of the vine. They must carefully maintain the vines to avoid cryptogamic diseases.
Constantia specializes in the production of white wines. For its fortified white wine, it uses the Muscat de Frontignan grape variety. But the region also seeks to make itself known beyond this dessert wine by making exceptional white wines from Sauvignon Blanc. These are lively, nervous wines, with mineral notes and less tropical than the Sauvignon Blanc of Australia.
