Walker Bay is a famous tourist area in South Africa, especially for its whale watching sites in Hermanus. Today, it is also attractive thanks to its flourishing viticulture and its wines that arouse the curiosity of wine lovers from all over the world.
In the Overberg district, the Walker Bay area is located east of Cape Town. This coastal wine-growing area has a fairly temperate maritime climate. To be exact, Walker Bay is one of the coolest regions in Africa. The soils are well drained and not very fertile which allows for high quality grapes. They produce the lowest yields of small grapes with a high concentration of flavors and aromas.
The Chardonnays of the area are the most similar South African white wines to the Burgundian Chardonnays as Walker Bay is the coolest wine region in the country. These chardonnay-based wines have a lively acidity, fruity flavors with mineral notes.
