An hour's drive west of Vienna, the Wachau region stretches along the Danube, within the regional appellation Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). The sun-orientated vineyards produce rich and powerful wines.
The region has its own appellation system with the names appearing on the labels : Steinfeder designates light, fresh and tangy wines; Federspiel for medium-bodied, medium-dry wines; Smaragd for the most full-bodied and complex wines.
In Wachau Riesling takes a small part of the vineyard but requires the best sites to produce high quality wines recognized worldwide. Rieslings have a firm mouthfeel and mineral notes. Their degree of alcohol generally exceeds 13°.
Almost 90% of the wine production in Wachau is devoted to the Austrian grape variety Grüner Veltliner. Wachau's Grüner Veltliner wines are ripe and full-bodied, expressing vegetal and white pepper aromas, with citrus notes and a roundness of honey. They can be aged in the bottle to develop their honey and retain their peppery aromas.
