Between Beaune and Volnay, Pommard marks the place where the Côte de Beaune branches off and faces more to the southeast. The terroir of pommard is limited to this commune and its vineyard is located on the hillside, at an altitude of 280 m. Developed since the Middle Ages, it produces exclusively solid and tannic red wines, made from pinot noir. There are no grands crus here, but twenty-eight premiers crus that occupy the middle of the hillside and rest on clay-limestone soils. The rich soil explains the firmness and excellence of these wines. Some crus have acquired an important notoriety, such as the Rugiens, the Pézerolles and the Épenots.
