The Sauternes vineyard is located on the banks of the Gironde, in the department named after this river, which also belongs to the Bordeaux vineyard. Since Roman times, the grapes have been used to produce prestigious wines, which today have a worldwide reputation. This AOC communal appellation, groups together five communes: Barsac, Bommes, Fargues Preignac and Sauternes, located on the left bank of the Garonne.
Sauternes is a sweet type of wine, with an unusual history, where an old owner who returned to the estate too late found himself faced with overripe grapes. He then tried his hand at late vinification. It was a surprise when he discovered that the noble rot of the grapes brought aromas to the wine.
The land where the vineyard is located reveals clay-limestone sub-soils with layers of gravel having settled. The most famous vintages are planted on gravel sections. The white wine of Sauternes is made of white semillon, sauvignon blanc, and muscadelle. The noble rot of the grapes is due to a high level of natural humidity, allowing during the winemaking process to keep a residual sugar which makes all the flavour of this great wine.
