The famous Bolgheri takes its name from the small village of Bolgheri, located near the Mediterranean Sea, in the north of the province of Livorno in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, in the coastal region of Tuscany in Italy.
Spread over 1,200 hectares, this small wine-growing area has a great diversity of terroirs. The Bolgheri vineyard benefits from a microclimate offering an optimal combination to produce great wines, with an average annual temperature of 14° and a rainfall level of 600mm.
In 1994, DOC Bolgheri adopted its own production rules to maintain the level of excellence of Tuscan wines, dividing the appellation into three: Bolgheri Rosso, Bolgheri Superiore and the appellation reserved for Sassicaia vineyards, DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia.
Today, the DOC Bolgheri appellation authorizes the production of red wines. According to the appellation's specifications, red wines must be aged for one year in oak barrels before they can be marketed.
