The Brunello di Montalcino is undoubtedly one of the most renowned Italian red wines in Italy and the world. Brunello di Montalcino is produced on the hills of the province of Siena, in the municipality of Montalcino exclusively, from an area of 24,000 hectares, of which only 15% is planted with vines. With a typically Mediterranean climate, mainly dry, the area is protected to the south by Mount Amiata, which limits the action of storms and hailstorms.
The only authorized grape variety is Sangiovese, historically recognized in the area as Brunello, hence the name of the appellation. The maximum permitted yield per hectare is 8 tons with a minimum alcohol content of 12.5%.
The specifications of the appellation require Brunello di Montalcino to be aged for a minimum of two years in oak barrels and then 4 months in the bottle. It is sold 5 years after the harvest. Brunello di Montalcino can be labeled "Riserva" if it spends 6 months in the bottle and is sold 6 years after the harvest.
