Penedès is an important wine region of Catalonia, offering an impressive quantity and diversity of wines incomparable within the autonomous community.
Between Barcelona and Tarragona, Penedès has more than 27,000 hectares of vineyards, making it the largest and most extensive appellation in Catalonia. The vineyards are spread over a vast central plateau of 600 meters above sea level surrounded by mountains. Spread over three levels, the vineyards can produce wines of different styles:
La Baixa-Penedès is less than 250 meters above sea level. There, fruity and fresh reds based on Tempranillo. The producers make full-bodied red wines based on Garnacha and Monastrell (Mourvèdre).
La Mitja-Penedès is on a higher level (elevation between 250 and 500 meters). The climate is cooler and the grapes are of better quality because they keep a fresh acidity while reaching a good ripeness. The vines are used to make Cava, one of the best sparkling wines in the world. Here grows the best Tempranillo of the region based on fresh, slightly spicy wines with ripe strawberry and raspberry flavors.
On the Alt-Penedès, the heights exceed 500 meters above sea level. The freshness reaches more the plantations and the vineyards enjoy numerous microclimates thanks to the mountainous outcrops. The vineyards have low yields but produce some of the best Catalan wines, using Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling grapes.
