Overshadowed by its famous big sister the Napa, Sonoma is a beautiful and still relatively unknown wine region, only 30 minutes drive from San Francisco. From the Pacific Ocean to the Mayacamas Mountains, Sonoma is very hilly with a complex topography of hills, mountains and valleys unlike the very flat Napa.
The soil types are extremely diverse: basalt, shale, clay, volcanic lime, pebbles or gravel... And naturally, throughout its 24,000 hectares, with altitudes of up to 780 meters, the soils are just as diverse: from the cool Russian River where the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes excel, to the Sonoma Valley where Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon grapes express themselves best.
