classified as a premier grand cru in 1855, château latour in pauillac has a rich history. originally designated as the "tour de saint-maubert," a construction ordered in 1331, the estate began producing enough wine by the late 16th century to meet local needs. in the early 18th century, château latour became the property of the ségur family, gaining prestige alongside the neighboring château lafite, also owned by the marquis de ségur. château latour's wines started to be exported, particularly catching the attention of wine enthusiasts across the channel. two centuries later, the estate found itself under english ownership: the pearson groups in the early 1960s and allied lyons in 1988 became majority shareholders in the pauillac vineyard. since françois pinault's acquisition of the shares in 1993, château latour's wines have returned to french ownership. this vineyard stands at the pinnacle of the bordeaux hierarchy, maintaining unwavering consistency for several decades, justifying its elevation to a fourth star. it is challenging to find faults with latour, even in more modest vintages. it embodies the very essence of grand pauillac: powerful, rich, and complete, developing over time a complex and elegant bouquet. legendary vintages abound, and those fortunate enough to taste the 1945, 1947, 1961, or 1982 know what this exceptional terroir is capable of. the current director, frédéric engerer, faithfully perpetuates this demanding style. recent complete renovations of the cellars and technical facilities, coupled with rigorous selection, have propelled the vineyard to new heights. the forts de latour also distinguishes itself as an extraordinary vineyard, surpassing many classified growths in finesse and depth. lastly, a third label, le pauillac de latour, also deserves the attention of enthusiasts. note that since the 2012 vintage, the château no longer offers its wine en primeur but only "en livrable" when the team deems it has reached maturity. a unique commercial approach for a premier grand cru classé in 1855. les forts has a beautiful sap, with straightness and a form of classicism in the structure. the finish is sapid and juicy. pauillac, located in the bordeaux region, offers an enchanting and diverse setting with numerous activities to discover. here are some suggestions: · cruise on the gironde estuary: pauillac is situated along the gironde estuary. a cruise on this magnificent river provides panoramic views of the vineyards and a unique perspective on the region. · visit to the citadel of blaye: a short drive away, the citadel of blaye offers an interesting visit. it is classified as a unesco world heritage site and provides stunning views of the gironde estuary. · excursion to bordeaux: take advantage of the proximity to bordeaux, a dynamic and cultural city. explore the historic centre, place de la bourse, the quays, museums, and savour bordeaux cuisine in one of the many restaurants.
