the winery is located in the community of burg layen-rümmelsheim, in the german wine region of nahe. the origins of "burg leyen" date back to the end of the 13th century. it was built on a rocky ridge in the trollbach valley, on the lower course of the nahe, shortly before its confluence with the rhine. three castles belonging to different noble owners were built on the territory, with extensive land holdings and vineyards in the surrounding area. the present castle estate was purchased by johann peter diel (1750-1811) from heribert wolfgang freiherr von dalberg in 1802, during the occupation of the nahe region by napoleon bonaparte's troops (1769-1821), after the diel family had already rented it for decades. today, the estate is managed by armin diel and his daughter caroline, with christoph j. friedrich as cellar master. the vineyard has a total of 22 hectares of vines, the bulk of which are located in the grand cru vdp burgberg, goldloch and pittermännchen (dorsheim), as well as in the premier cru vdp schlossberg, hölle and johannisberg (burg layen). the grossen lagen are exclusively planted with riesling, in the erste lagen the varieties pinot gris (grauburgunder), pinot blanc (weiß burgunder) and pinot noir (blauer spätburgunder) also play an important role. the chardonnay and dornfelder varieties are grown on smaller areas. according to the vdp-nahe statutes, only rieslings from the best individual vineyards are marketed under the name lagen. bottle-fermented and hand-shaken sparkling wines are also produced. the estate is a member of the vdp and a founding member of the deutsches barrique-forum. schlossgutt diel cuvée victor 1998 nose of citrus fruit, brioche and breadcrumbs. simple, not very expressive and short on the palate. slightly bitter finish. a lot of frankness in the mouth, airy balance. a recognized quality that will guarantee you a taste full of exellence.
