Madeira is a fortified wine available in a range of dry to sweet styles. It takes its name from Madeira Island, a small and beautiful rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The unique taste of Madeira comes from the repeated heating of the wine. Heating creates a wine with fascinating flavours of roasted nuts. There are several taste profiles of Madeira, but most will have flavours of caramel, walnut oil, peach, hazelnut, orange peel and burnt sugar. There are rare varieties on Madeira Island such as Terrantez and Bastardo.
