The Rueda appellation is mainly located in the province of Valladolid, in the west of Castilla y León, near Ribera del Duero.
The appellation is known mainly for its aromatic white wines made from Verdejo. Therefore, it is mainly the "Verdejo" grape variety that has made the name and fame of this region. This Verdejo is unique and exists only in Rueda. It has no relation with the Italian Verdicchio and the Portuguese Verdelho. It is a very aromatic grape variety with a lot of freshness and an almost natural minerality.
The freshness is also conditioned by the altitude, between 650 and 850 meters; a typical representative of the Castilian highlands. Next to Verdejo, there is also Macabeo, and more and more Sauvignon Blanc, with which Verdejo is often confused in blind tastings. Commercially, this appellation is also a success: very fresh and affordable white wines are produced here, which are highly appreciated in Spain and elsewhere.
