The United States is the 4th largest wine producer in the world behind Italy, France and Spain. Thanks to the AVA (American Viticultural Areas), protected designations of origin have been established. To be labeled as AVA, an American wine must be 85% blended with grapes from that region. 

 

Single grape varieties (known as 'varietal') must be blended only 75% with grapes from the region. Grand Cru and vintage wines must be 95% in compliance with these regulations. Another difference is the inscription on the label, as it is not mandatory to include the mention AVA or American Viticultural Area.

 

The most cultivated grape varieties are Zinfandel, typically Californian, but also Riesling and Chardonnay, straight from Europe.
