To get to the province of Maipo, just leave the capital Santiago and head south. The vine plantations in Chile started here.
The province of Maipo is enclosed to the east by the imposing heights of the Andes Cordillera and is separated from the Pacific Ocean to the west by the Coastal Cordillera. Warm and dry, this region benefits from technological advances in irrigation to give wine production more consistency.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape variety in Maipo. On the heights of the Alto Maipo, the wines are elegant, with blackcurrant aromas and hints of eucalyptus. In the rest of the region, Cabernet Sauvignon produces full-bodied and mentholated wines.
This region is described as Bordeaux for the prosperity of international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Carménère.
