The 28 Premiers Crus of Pommard are situated on surrounding hillsides, like most Premier Cru sites, however several break the mold by holding ground on the flat valley floor, which is usually reserved for the regional or village wines that are lower down the rung of quality, according to France’s appellation system.
Although a small percentage of vines are planted to white grapes, none can be used for the Premier Cru wines in Pommard. The only grape that can hold this title is Pinot Noir and the resulting wines are often described in one word: powerful. These robust reds will stand out from other red Burgundies in a blind tasting with marked darker red color and gripping tannins, coupled with typical flavors of earth, smoke, and game, all backed up by plum and red cherry fruit character. These Pinots can easily age 20 to 25 years.
