The Roussillon is like an amphitheater dominated by heights often difficult to cross that separate it from neighboring provinces. The climate of Roussillon is characterized by a dry summer season and a rainy period in autumn and early spring. This Mediterranean-type climate, influenced by the nearby mountains, favors the ripening of the grapes.
The main grape varieties of Roussillon wines are Carignan, Grenache, Lladoner Pelut, Mourvèdre and Syrah for red wines, especially those recognized by a local AOC such as Côtes du Roussillon Villages.
